COE prepares for ABET visit
by Dr. Ailyn Caday
AMAIUB’s College of Engineering looks forward to ABET accreditation to strengthen its programs and consistently deliver quality education set by international standards. ABET--a recognized U.S. accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computer, engineering, and technology--provides international leadership through workshops, consultancies, and memoranda of understanding or joint agreements.
AMAIUB COE’s accreditation core group headed by the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Office director, Dr. Geraldo Talisic, conferred with Dr. Jose Cruz, a U.S.-based ABET consultant, last March 16-20, 2012, relative to the final report draft (for the first three ABET criteria), narratives and data finalization (for the criteria 4-6 of the engineering Self-Survey Report), review of guidelines (in writing the last two ABET criteria), and details for inclusion in the final draft of the engineering SSR.
ABET criterion chairs Dr. Emelin M. Magada , AMAIUB head of Academic Affairs and COE OIC-dean; Dr. Aileen Caday , COE associate dean; and Dr. Beda Aleta, Dr. Lalitha Guralla, and Engr. Sumetha Geevarghese, who are all COE department heads, presented their report drafts based on ABET guidelines.
Among the recommendations made by Dr. Cruz were COE’s finalization of credit hours, defining the depth of study for each subject, review of course mapping against student outcomes (SOs), and limiting the number of each course SOs. He also stressed the importance of submitting the Self Survey Report (SSR) to the ABET Audit Desk within the ABET timeframe.
